Marine Technology Multifunctional Ice Basin

Current:

The call for proposals for HydraLab IV is submitted. More information is found here and on http://www.hydralab.eu

Hydralab IV:

The Aalto University Ice Tank is part of HYDRALAB IV (http://www.hydralab.eu) / Transnational Access / Framework 7, where the facility is provided for researchers. Find more information in section HydraLab IV (link to FAQ). In the EU funded HydraLab IV project, researchers apply for using the research facility including measurement equipment and staff’s expertise to conduct tests. The research is public. Find more information here (link to FAQ) or email the Project Manager ruediger.vonbock [at] aalto [dot] fi (R.U.F. von Bock and Polach)

History:

The ice tank of the Marine Technology Group of Aalto University (former HUT / TKK) was established early 1980´s and thus the Ice Tank provides about 25 years experience of model scale testing in ice. The activities in the tank have been related to resistance and propulsion tests of ships, maneuvering tests and various marine structures and their interaction with ice and the modeling of natural ice formations such as ice-ridges. The facility and its ice have been proving their functionality over the years in many research tests and commercial tests.

Ice Tank Properties:

The ice tank facility at TKK is worldwide unique due to its large dimensions of 40m width, 40m length and 2.8m depth. The carriage operates and moves in plane and can reach any point of the 40m x 40m surface area. One side of the tank is equipped with a 40m wide segmented plunger type wave maker and a 40m wide beach at the opposite end.

Model Ice:

The model ice is fine grained and generated from water doped with 0.3% ethanol.

FAQ on HydraLab IV

Question Answer

Who can apply

Any researcher from Member States of the European Community and Associated States can apply or a researcher from an institution / company within the EU and Switzerland. Such research projects are often part of doctoral studies or master thesis projects (click here for details). Find examples from HydraLab III on http://www.hydralab.eu

How can I apply?

Send your proposal, including a cost estimate for flight and accommodation to ruediger.vonbock [at] aalto [dot] fi (R.U.F. von Bock and Polach)

What does the ice test project include?

The project includes assistance in the test preparation, test conduction and test analysis. After the tests, the researchers can stay up to two weeks at the facility to get expert support on the analysis and interpretation of the test results.

What does the proposal has to contain?

The proposal has to contain scope of work, a test procedure and a cost estimate

Who is paying the research?

Costs for travel, accommodation, facility time, facility equipment and facility staff are reimbursed, i.e. paid by the EU project. It is also possible to provide a model for testing. If a specific model is needed, the researcher has to provide it himself or pay for the manufacturing. The manufacturing costs of a model are usually small in comparison to the overall tank testing. For further information please email to ruediger.vonbock [at] aalto [dot] fi (R.U.F. von Bock and Polach)

Dates and Deadlines:

Proposals must be submitted until 31th January 2011

What does the researcher has to do?

The researcher must publish his work
