The Graduate School in Engineering Mechanics is a network of eight units from five Finnish universities (Helsinki University of Technology, University of Jyväskylä, Lappeenranta University of Technology, University of Oulu and Tampere University of Technology). All the Finnish universities teaching engineering mechanics are members of the graduate school. The central aim of the Graduate School in Engineering Mechanics is to promote the professional career of a scientist in engineering mechanics. The graduate school is offering four year funding for the students, organising national courses and seminars, funding visits of the students to foreign research units as well as informing about suitable graduate courses in Finland and abroad. The Graduate School in Engineering Mechanics has been operating successfully from 1995.
The students who have earned a doctor's degree in engineering mechanics will work as high level experts and scientists in industry, research organisations and universities. The fast development of technology and the increasing number if retiring experts will increase the need of engineers with a doctor's degree. The graduate school has close and broad connections to the Finnish industry. Several thesis topics have arisen from industrial research problems and many students linked with the graduate school get funding from joint industry research projects.
