Nowadays ships can be seen as small modern cities including the latest technology, design and business models. Cruise & Ferry Experience –program sees cruise ships and ferries as a natural combination of different disciplines and endless possibility to research collaboration. Aim of the Cruise & Ferry Experience program is to develop high-level research between technology, business and the arts and design in true interlinked environment.

Bachelor theses

Cruise & Ferry Experience –program sees research as advanced learning process in the university that starts already from the Bachelor’s thesis stage. We are constantly seeking future post-graduate students who are interest of establishing their Bachelor theses in multidisciplinary environment of passenger ships.

Kolmen kopla –joint master theses

Award winning Kolmen kopla (triad) –joint master theses project executes master theses from equivalent topic in passenger ship context. Yearly organized project connects three master candidates from fields of economics, naval architecture and design or architecture in multidisciplinary research environment.

The 2012 triad are related to loft-cabin development at Turku and to adjustable cabin areas in Otaniemi.

Post-graduate research

Cruise & Ferry Experience –program aims to carry out interlinked research on all levels and constantly seeks new collaboration possibilities. Current post-graduate researches concentrate on user-experiences in passenger ship design and new innovative structures.

Jasmin Jelovica investigates the strength of a passenger ship where traditional structural building blocks are replaced with a modern, lightweight counterpart. It is a sandwich type of panel whose behaviour and interaction with the ship under service loads requires better understanding. This could enable a larger freedom in the structural design of a passenger ship with more spacious open areas and improved safety.

In theoretical study about experience design Markus Ahola investigates how design affects on user-experiences on passenger ships: which are the most critical touch points of passenger experiences creation that should be emphasised in design.
